Giada SDM Modules Empower New Retail

Nowadays, smart displays are rapidly evolving as customers are looking for sleeker and more sophisticated designs. Displays are getting ever less bulky, with virtually unnoticeable bezels and ultra-thin profiles. Applications such as magic mirrors and rotating screens are putting pressure on designers and system integrators to evolve with the “thin is in” trend and reduce the size of the media players driving these displays.

At the same time, digital transformation is riding the next wave of innovation in the retail industry.  Since ecommerce space with even the most sophisticated technology cannot deliver the visual and sensory experience of shopping in physical stores, retailers are exploring ways to optimize this in-store experience by enabling innovative technologies like Smart Shelves technology. Smart Shelves technology enables the business owners to take more informed decisions, by keeping a real time tracking on what products are being taken from the store shelves and what is remaining. The real time analysis of data enables retailers to stock on more fast moving products and reduce the number of slow moving items.

As everyone knows, numerous display manufactures are offering smart displays with integrated media players. These smart displays are built around the concept of a System-on-a-Chip (SOC), a simple solution that allowed manufacturers to integrate all key computer components into a single integrated circuit that could be embedded inside the device. Looking across the spectrum of digital signage solutions and media players, we see a fractured market with major screen manufacturers selling various SoC technologies, each running proprietary operating systems. A SoC design with Minibox plug change usages is urged for the market.

Introduction of Intel® SDM
To help designers and system integrators balance the various requirements of modern displays and to bring standardization to the fragmented media player market, Intel® developed the Intel® Smart Display Module (Intel® SDM) specification.

The new standard allows for smaller and scalable all-in-one designs that benefit from cost-effective implementation and management of integrated Intel-based processor media players. Its design omits the housing, so it can be fully integrated into visual IoT applications like interactive mirrors and smart shelve displays that require minimal space and deliver maximum performance.

Intel® SDM modules come in two sizes: Intel® SDM Small (Intel® SDM-S) measures 60 mm x 100 mm, with a maximum thickness of 20 mm. Intel® SDM Large (Intel® SDM-L) measures 175 mm x 100 mm.

Giada SDM Modules
Giada, as a reference design partner of Intel® SDM, offers the SDM-Z8350, an Intel® SDM-S module, and SDM-7300U, an Intel® SDM-L module. Giada SDM-Z8350 features Intel® Atom Cherrytrail Z8350 CPU and up to 4 GB onboard memory. It is equipped with a 32G eMMC and can support Windows, Linux and Android 5.1.

Giada SDM-7300U adopts Intel Core i5-7300U/7200U CPU and supports up to 32GB DDR4 memory. The module, offering an HDMI port, can display video and images with 4k resolution.

Both the two modules have standard Intel SDM I/O, comprising 1x HDMI port (for 4K display), 1x DisplayPort, 1x USB 3.0 port, and 1x COM port. While the SDM-Z8350 has onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the SDM-7300U instead relies on an M.2 port for a wireless module supporting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Effects on Ecosystem of Giada SDM Products
The release of Giada SDM Products will have a significant impact on the digital signage ecosystem. Tier I brand display manufactures can integrate Giada SDM modules into general AIO displays and put them on the market in large quantities in short time. Industry display suppliers can also cooperate with Giada to customize AIO displays to empower multiple vertical markets such as retail, education, medical, transportation and more. Furthermore, the launch of SDM modules enables SI to provide integrated solutions for vertical industry applications by deep cooperation with Giada.

On the Intel® SDM Circle Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand, on December 13th, Giada premiered a 10.1-inch interactive All-in-One, powered by the SDM-S (Z8358). The SoC (System on Chip) panel is customized for visual retail, smart catering, and health-care markets. The ultra-thin panel, adopting the Giada SDM-Z8350, is built for long-time operation. The compact panel was created as a fanless design, which helps it reduce power consumption, space, and costs. Several SI partners have already applied this panel as a POS (point-of-sale) solution and in smart shelf solutions in the catering and retail industry.

Giada has also started cooperation with some well-known brand display manufactures, industry display suppliers and regional SI on AIO solutions based on SDM products. These solutions, which are supposed to empower new retail, will be on the market in 2019.

Intel® SDM and OPS
Intel® SDM delivers the same level of intelligence and interoperability as the Open Pluggable Specification, but in smaller form factor yet that eliminates the housing and advances the thinnest integrated displays. The adoption of SDM specification and reference design introduced by Intel enable an increasing number of display manufacturers to provide AIO solutions for customers, and their influence in the digital signage ecosystem is also increasing.

Similar to OPS, Intel® SDM offers high-performance processing that enables execution of edge analytics and interactive features such as magic mirrors. like OPS, the modules use a 98-pin PCIe interface connector, with optional port expansion Support of a high-speed interface and a wide range of processors ensure scalability as performance requirements increase.
